This article examined how Bedouin and Jewish mothers in Israel processed experiences of parenting children with special needs. Fifty Bedouin and 72 Jewish mothers participated in semi-structured interviews. Comparative analysis revealed that all mothers processed their experiences on religious and social levels as empowering/resilient or diminishing/stressful. Main differences were: (a) Jewish mothers mentioned guilt and secular perspectives; (b) Bedouin mothers mentioned issues of authority and submission to God; (c) Bedouin mothers regarded lack of proficiency and knowledge as a stressor, whereas Jewish mothers regarded proficiency as a resilience factor. The article suggests culturally-adapted recommendations for practitioners working in traditional communities.
