Over the years, the Statistical Physics activity in Mexico has increased from almost zero in the early 1960s to an international level today. It began in the later part of that decade with a small group at the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP) and then grew at the Metropolitan University (UAM), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the Center for Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), all of them in Mexico City. Later it expanded to Puebla and San Luis Potosí, and the 1990s saw a significant growth across the country, with young groups forming in Morelos, Baja California Norte, Guanajuato, Sonora, Estado de México, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Veracruz, Querétaro, and Yucatán. Several of the papers presented in this edition come from these groups.
