About Conference : The East Asia Top-Level Officials’ Meeting on Competition Policy (EATOP) and the East Asia Conference on Competition Law and Policy (EAC) have served as a cornerstone platform for 2 decades, for high-level competition authorities across East and Southeast Asia. Through annual convenings, these meetings have enabled authorities to exchange views, share policy progress, and discuss emerging developments in competition law and regulatory frameworks, thereby strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding across the region.

The 20th anniversary of EATOP marks a significant milestone, reflecting sustained collaboration, policy dialogue, and knowledge exchange among regional partners. Hosted by the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank Institute and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the event marks the first time ADB joins as a cohost, highlighting an important expansion of the partnership that deepens the shared commitment to promoting fair competition and inclusive economic development across the region.

Competition law and policy remain essential for promoting fair markets, protecting consumers and businesses from anti-competitive conduct, and supporting sustainable economic growth. In an evolving global landscape, competition authorities face new challenges arising from digitalization, artificial intelligence, and sustainability imperatives. These include addressing platform dominance, calibrating proportionate ex-ante regulation, and ensuring that sustainability initiatives and green collaborations enhance market access and innovation rather than restriction.

Against this backdrop, the 20th EATOP and 17th EAC provide a timely platform for policymakers, competition authorities, and experts to exchange insights on digital-market enforcement, sustainability considerations, and the growing role of economics in competition enforcement.
