The purpose of this article is to discuss the varieties of capitalism in Latin America and verify the arrival of grassroots governments altered the course of implemented labor policies after the 1990s More precisely it is the discussion of labor regulation under the PT governments (2003-2013) and Chavez (1999-2013) respectively in Brazil and Venezuela. The research aims to analyze how these governments treated the institutional legacy left by the neoliberal predecessors. We use the theory of capitalism varieties and the concept of path dependence for the understanding of the issue. We realize that the strength of the social movements in the streets was decisive for the different positions taken by both petismo as the Chavistas.
