Types of Sri Lanka Stupa

Since Sri Lanka stupa have been affected by Indian stupa directly, study about Sri Lanka stupa is important to understand the essence of Buddhist Art history. Sri Lanka stupa is classified with the shape of the body of stupa into 7 types according to ‘Vijayanta potha’, the Ancient Buddhist text. With the inconvenience or using unfamiliar words and irrational gap between the initial Sri Lanka stupa and existing ones, proposing new classification about Sri Lanka Stupa is essential. The new 4 types of Sri Lanka stupa are 1) Bell type, 2) Jar type, 3) Mound type, 4) Bubble type. The proposal of new classification about Sri Lanka Dome stupa is for using Easier words to describe the types and make it as reasonable to use for the latter studies. Bell type stupas are mainly located in Anuradhapura, Hambantota’s Jar type stupa is hard to find, Kelaniya stupa is representative for Mound type, and Bubble type is comparatively located in whole parts of Sri Lanka.
