This article aims to challenge the Eurocentric framework of the “era of the bourgeois‐democratic revolution” by exposing both the Eurocentric assumptions embedded in historiographical works and the historical dynamics that consecrated the West as the birthplace of political modernity. It utilizes the interpenetration between the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution to reconceptualize this era in transatlantic and transcultural terms. The first part reviews how recent historical studies of the Haitian Revolution redefine the colonial people as not just passive recipients of metropolitan ideas but as modern political subjects in the contestations over what “liberty,”“rights,” and “citizenship” meant. The second part traces how the nineteenth‐century French discourse of emancipation and civilization “silenced” the Haitian Revolution and Haiti in order for the French Revolution to monopolize the status as the origin of liberty. Lastly, this article examines the possibilities for rethinking the masternarratives of modernity and liberty in light of the redefined “Age of Revolution.”
