The failure of Turkey’s military coup attempt on July 15, 2016 is bringing great confusion to the Republic of Turkey. Turkey, which recently announced a state of national emergency, is showing extensive purging along with fearful and dictatorship-like movements towards Fethullah Gülen, the main person being blamed for the coup attempt, and his supporters. However, the common identity that the current Erdoğan government and Fethullah Gülen have is to ultimately make Turkey into a politically Islamic nation. The fundamental difference that can be seen is that President Erdoğan’s Islamization is utilizing the visible administration system, whereas Gülen’s Islamization, or the so called ‘Postmodernism Islam’, is seeking to bring change from the inner and spiritual system. In other words, both sides want to revive Islam in the political sphere from the current secular state. Whatever their difference is, the current secularism of the Republic of Turkey is being threatened by the two parties’ common goal. This is because it is an ultimate attack and challenge towards the ideology of Turkey’s political establishment.
