For the first time in the political history of Mexico, a leftist party has won the Presidential election in 2018. This paper examines the process of the split and the recreation of leftist parties in Mexico. Since the fall of the PRI hegemony in the presidential election of 1988, the Mexican political circle has established a three-party system consisting of the right-wing PAN, the centrist PRI, and the leftist PRD of which López Obrador was presidential candidate twice after leaving the PRI. Nevertheless, he won the 2018 election as the candidate of Morena, the new leftist party which he created after leaving the PRD. This paper strives to answer the following research questions: Why did López Obrador leave the PRD and create the new party, Morena? Why has this split the PRD which previously served as the integrated leftist party?
