Auctions are a leading tool for facilitating clean energy investment. Latin America has been at the forefront of using auctions to develop renewable energy capacity. Some of the worlds first successful renewable energy tenders were held in Latin American countries, such as Brazil and Uruguay, and these leaders have since been joined by at least 15 other nations in the region. This publication discusses the benefits for Latin American and Caribbean countries of implementing auctions to attract investments in clean energy in order to diversify the energy matrix, improve energy security and reduce exposure to oil price volatility. The monograph examines the design and outcomes of recent government-led long-term power auctions with participation from non-conventional renewable sources in six countries of the region: Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, and Jamaica. It also offers recommendations for the design of clean energy auctions for Latin American and Caribbean countries.
