This note presents lessons learned from the World Bank’s subnational governance projects in Brazil, Nigeria, and Nicaragua - between 2010-2020. The note synthesizes the main findings from the Implementation Completion and Results (ICR) reports and ICR reviews of these projects. The lessons learned from these projects can be useful in shaping the design of future subnational governance projects in other client countries, particularly those projects seeking to improve public expenditure systems, service delivery, and core governance institutions
