Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that causes life-threatening acute complications and is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke, and cognitive impairment. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the estimated global prevalence of diabetes worldwide was 10·5% in 2021 and is expected to increase to 12·2% by 2024.1 In middle-income countries, diabetes prevalence is projected to rise from 10·8% in 2021 to 12·1% in 2045.1 In Latin American countries, there is a marked scarcity and heterogeneity of data, so that studies conducted between 2005 and 2020 have reported prevalences ranging from 3% to 36·3%.2 In Colombia, a country of about 50 million inhabitants, the estimated urban prevalence of diabetes in 2018 was surprisingly high compared to previous reports, at 10·1%.3 ...
