[외교/안보] U.S-Mexico Relations and Migration as an Impeding Factor. Trump's Presidency (2016-2020)

멕시코 국외연구자료 연구보고서 - University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 발간일 : 2024-04-01 등록일 : 2024-04-18 원문링크

Mexico and the United States share a multitude of important ties, including geographical, social, cultural, and economic connections. Additionally, they both have a vested interest in maintaining security. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, signed in 1848, marked the end of the U.S.-Mexico War and resulted in Mexico ceding a significant portion of its territories to the United States. This led to an intricate web of political, economic, and social ties between the two nations, including the acquisition of U.S. citizenship by many Mexicans. These connections are robust, and any issue, whether political, social, or economic, has the potential to significantly impact the bilateral relations between the two countries. The intricate issue of Mexican migration has considerably affected the bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States, especially from 2016-2020, during the Trump administration. The situation worsened due to the amplified levels of migration and security challenges. The matter of Mexican migration has garnered substantial interest from the global community, given its implications for North American safety. The magnitude and repercussions of this phenomenon have deemed it a crucial topic on the regional forefront. The purpose of this master thesis is to thoroughly investigate the impact of Mexican migration on the bilateral relations between the US and Mexico from 2016 to 2020, utilizing the theory of neoclassical realism. Through both qualitative and quantitative research methods, causal links between Mexican migration and the resulting economic, environmental, and social security issues caused by migration, as well as the impact on US-Mexico relations, are established. The thesis is divided into four parts, with the introduction defining the problem and its significance, and the main part conducting a detailed analysis of the influence of Mexican migration on the political, economic, and security relations between the two countries. The conclusion presents the results of the research, ultimately confirming the hypothesis that migration played a significant role in the crisis that arose in US-Mexico relations. Over a century ago, Mexican migration was encouraged by employment programs jointly developed by Mexico and the US, but the uncontrollable increase in scale eventually led to the addition of Central American countries and exacerbated security challenges. The increased scales of migration were deemed unacceptable by Donald Trump, ultimately leading to the crisis in the two countries' relations.
