The need for Antimicrobial Stewardship in dentistry was emphasized in 2019 by experts from the World Dental Federation, the FDI, as antibiotics are often inappropriately prescribed in dentistry.1 Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing occurs when antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily (when not needed) or incorrectly (wrong antibiotic, dose and/or duration). Around 80% of antibiotics prescribed in dentistry worldwide are found to be inappropriate,2, 3 adding to the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Action Plan provides a framework for development of national action plans (NAPs) to tackle AMR and includes dental prescribers as stakeholders.1, 4 The FDI's policy statement on antimicrobial stewardship in dentistry5 and the FDI white paper6 provide guidance and resources from the WHO for developing stewardship programmes.
