[경제] Women’s Participation, Constraints, and Opportunities for Trade in Bangladesh

방글라데시 국외연구자료 연구보고서 - World Bank 발간일 : 2021-01-21 등록일 : 2021-02-04 원문링크

The low level of women’s economic participation in the region, including Bangladesh, is a critical constraint to growth. While labor force participation in Bangladesh has increased for women, an almost 50 percentage point gender gap remains. Women are unemployed and underemployed at higher rates than men. Bangladeshi women earn 75 percent of the wages received by male counterparts and are concentrated in less profitable, ‘female’ industries. Even in the same industry, women are concentrated in lower levels of value chains. A limited number of Bangladeshi women are entrepreneurs and few of them venture into cross-border trade. Despite Bangladesh’s microfinance revolution, women still make up only 7 percent of the country’s entrepreneurs and own only 15 percent of firms in the country. The objective of this paper is to inform programming that promotes women’s economic empowerment in Bangladesh and enhances their participation in regional trade activities. The study considers women as entrepreneurs and women as workers in sectors with high potential for trade, and therefore, for increased employment of women. Gender-disaggregated trade data is scarce, making it challenging to gain a solid and comprehensive understanding of women’s participation in regional trade.
