[교육] Streamlining Higher Education in the Maldives: Issues and Challenges

Though the start of an institute in the Maldives can be traced back to 1973, the real start of higher education in the country was in 2000 with the introduction of the first bachelor's degree. Since the late 2000s, with the entrance of private higher education providers, the Maldives has seen a rapid increase in the number of both programs and students. The increase in the access and number of graduates is a positive development. However, this rapid expansion is also accompanied by some malpractices that undermine the quality of higher education qualifications. Infiltration of such malpractices into the higher education system is detrimental for the establishment of the system in the country. These issues are related to a lack of understanding and lack of application of some of the standard practices and concepts in higher education delivery, such as mode of study, delivery modality, medium of instruction, teaching time or hours, library, assessment, entry criteria, etc. that have a direct impact on quality of provision.
