[정책] Preventing Terrorism and Extremism in Pakistan after re-emergence of Taliban in Afghanistan: A perspective from southern Punjab

파키스탄 국외연구자료 연구보고서 - SDPI 발간일 : 2023-08-24 등록일 : 2023-08-27 원문링크

Since the reemergence of Taliban in Afghanistan, Pakistan is witnessing a new wave of terrorism on its soil. The target killing of civilians and military officials is again on the rise. Amid security threats to different institutions, including the educational ones, there is a need to adopt policy level measures as how to control the situation. Although a series of such events is occurring in the bordering area, the southern Punjab can be the victim of such attacks, if proper measures are not taken. This study describes and explain the effects of Taliban takeover on Pakistani society and state. It also elaborates different measures to counter this menace and stop further spread of terrorism and extremism in other parts of Pakistan in general and southern Punjab in particular. For this purpose, key informant interviews and surveys were conducted. It is generally believed that extremism, and terrorism in Afghanistan can impact Pakistani society whereas people have divided opinion on it. Majority believes that reemergence of Taliban did not result in terrorism in southern Punjab. The study suggests that Pakistan should urge the world to address the financial and humanitarian crises of Afghanistan and similarly convince the Taliban regime to adopt a moderate approach in its diplomatic relations with the world. It further suggests the need for a new strategy to break linkages between militant groups in Pakistan especially TTP and Afghanistan.
