After breakup of Soviet Union, independent CIS countries had tried to form a economic cooperation within the regional area. However, several attempts during the 1990’s transition period and to exclude the influence of Russia did not lead the concrete results. Because, Russia couldn’t do central role in the middle of 1990’s chaotic transition period and, other countries could not do economic role as Russia in the economic cooperation where Russia had excluded. Recently, Russia clearly reveals its intention to maintain the political and economic influence on CIS region through the economic cooperation. In the 2000s, the economic role of Russia to intensify economic cooperation within CIS region can be summarized as follows. First, in the 2000s, the amount of investment assets of Russia in the CIS region is increasing largely. This intensifies correlations between industries and financial sectors. Second, CIS inflows of labor force into Russia have risen sharply, and as a result of this, remittance from Russia to these countries is a crucial part of the economic operation. Third, most countries maintain high trade volume with Russia, especially relatively low cost of energy imports compared to the West has deepened trade dependence to Russia. These factors have been functioning as a driver of economic cooperation in the CIS region to Russia. Russia does central role to overcome economic limit as a economic superpower in the CIS region where most countries can be classified as developing or economically small countries.
