Global agricultural and environmental challenges, such as climate change and soil degradation, have far-reaching implications for sustainability. Agricultural and environmental sustainability is an integral harmonious balance between food production and environmental stewardship that requires collaboration among farmers, policymakers, researchers, and communities through the adoption of the principles and practices that equilibrate the needs of agriculture with the preservation of the environment. Thus, making agricultural systems more resilient, environmentally friendly, and equipped to satisfy current demands without jeopardizing the capacity of future generations to address their own needs. This review paper discusses the challenges faced by Nigeria in achieving agricultural and environmental sustainability, given its population and urbanization upsurge, heavy reliance on agriculture, and the impact of changing weather patterns and diminishing natural resources. Low agricultural productivity, high burden of disease, and loss of lives and property due to diverse environmental issues, and unregulated anthropogenic activities amongst numerous bottlenecks confronting Nigeria’s agricultural and environmental sustainability were reviewed. To address these issues, the paper suggests implementing sustainable farming practices, investing in renewable energy sources, and adopting policies that promote conservation and resilience in the face of global environmental challenges, thus contributing to local and global sustainability efforts. Prospects for achieving environmental and agricultural sustainability in Nigeria, which could greatly assist in bringing to fruition the AU’s agenda for 2063 (“The Africa We Want”) were suggested.
