동남아시아 일반 국내연구자료 학술논문 전제성 /Jeon Je Seong 1 , 이재현 2 동남아시아연구 발간일 : 2008-08-31 등록일 : 2017-11-16 원문링크

This research surveys current curriculum of Southeast Asian studies in Korea and suggests an ideal model for reproducing area specialists. First, this study examines the importance of Southeast Asia for Korea in economic, diplomatic and social aspects and analyses the current curriculum of Southeast Asian studies at the levels of undergraduate and post-graduate, particularly focusing on graduate schools of international studies. We found out that there are only a few courses on Southeast Asia at the undergraduate level in Korean universities. Those courses are not proportionately distributed to all Southeast Asian countries. Graduate schools of international studies, which originally intended to nurture area specialists, failed to do so. Despite these difficulties, there has been a positive sign. Such organizations as KISEAS (Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) and KASEAS (Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies) have invested their efforts to stimulate graduate students' seminar and to support financially their fieldwork. As a result, they are growing small but strong new generation of Southeast Asian specialists. Such efforts are positive, but not enough. More efforts should be made to increase the number of courses on Southeast Asia, to strengthen the existing courses, to train students with local languages and to widen opportunities for students to experience the field. The efforts made by Southeast Asia area specialists individually and collectively, combined with the fast growing interests in Southeast Asia, will brighten the future of Southeast Asian area studies in Korea.
