Growth decelerated more than expected to 1.8 percent in Q2 2023, amid the global trade slowdown. Privateconsumption remained strong, buoyed by a strong labor market and the gradual tourism recovery. Slowing inflationand energy subsidies relieved pressures on living costs and supported private consumption. As a result, fiscalconsolidation remained gradual due to extended energy subsidies. In July, the Thai baht appreciated, similar tomost Asian currencies, as the current account returned to surplus.
