This article explores the current prospects for political changes in the UAE, as it puts the characteristics of the leadership of the UAE led by Abu Dhabi and Dubai and the aspects of the political reform movements based on Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Northern Emirates in the proper light. To do this, the article first analyzes why Al Qawashim, the powerful maritime forces based in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, declined in 19th century and how the leadership of Al Nahyan, the Ruling Family of Abu Dhabi, was established. Second, it analyzes the power structure of the UAE and examines the current possibility for political reforms, including the electoral system reform raised by some intellectuals. Finally, it analyzes the characteristics of AlIslah, which has been the most powerful political opposition movement against the government of UAE since 2011.
