Land-related issues are key drivers of conflict and violence in many African countries. Equally, ensuring the equitable and effective use of land will unlock solutions to many otherwise intransigent development issues. Land issues are of particular concern today when the forces of population growth, climate change, food systems and the growing demand for energy and feed are driving intense competition for land and increasing pressures on land resources. These factors increase the number of disputes within communities, between communities and investors, between communities and governmental institutions, and between farmers and herders. As a result, throughout Africa land disputes represent a high percentage of the legal cases brought before the courts.
