The estimated annual cost of environmental degradation in Peru amounted to 4.1 percent of its GDP in 20121. Most of this cost was associated with morbidity and mortality as a result of indoor and outdoor air pollution, inadequate water, hygiene and sanitation, and lead exposure – environmental risks that disproportionally affect the poorest and most vulnerable groups and, consequently, contribute to the vicious cycle of poverty. Despite its efforts to address pollution and environmental health risks, the Government of Peru (GoP) has limited capacity for environmental quality control.
